"No Easy Day" dilemma
You might not remember much about May 2, 2011, but you most likely remember where you were, or what you were doing, when you heard the news that Osama bin Laden had been killed. It was a high-risk mission carried out by U.S. Navy Seals, a special operations force of our U.S. military. Over the next few days minor details about the raid were revealed, but that was it. The identity of the Navy Seals that carried out the mission, and specific details about the raid, were kept secret.
However, as we approach the 11th anniversary of September 11th, a new book has hit stores shelves titled "No Easy Day." A former Navy Seal, and member of the team that brought down bin Laden, has written his account of that raid for the world to read. The author goes by the pen name "Mark Owen" and can be seen in the video wearing a disguise.
The publication of this book has been met with wide controversy. View the video from CBS news and respond to the questions below to complete your first blog!
1. Summarize in your own words the controversy surrounding this book.
2. Why is the government torn over the writing of this book?
3. Do you think it was right for this former Navy Seal to publish this book, or do you think the government should press charges against him? Provide at least one reason to support your argument.
4. Would you read this book? Why or why not?
